Calling All Bakers! Kairos Prison Ministry Team Needs 600 Dozen Cookies!

The St. Matthew’s Kairos team is looking for a few good bakers!  (Actually, we could use more than a few.)  Randy Jones will be helping a new Kairos team going into the Sussex II State Prison October 24th-28th.  The rest of us are headed back to Greensville Correctional Center November 7th-11th.

In all, we need 500 dozen cookies! Cookie instructions and ziplock bags are available in the Information Hallway. Please consider blessing the men in the Sussex and Greensville prisons with these gifts of love. They can be brought to St. Matthew’s as soon as you have them ready, or frozen and brought in at your convenience, as long as we have them by Wednesday morning, November 7th.  (We’ll be storing them in the church kitchen freezer.)

We’ll also have place-mats for decorating during the church-wide Fall Service Day on Saturday, October 20th.  This is another way to play an important part in our Kairos Prison Ministry.

In addition - we are looking for prayer partners to pray for the retreat while it is ongoing. There will be a signup sheet along with prayer vigil suggestions sitting beside the cookie info.

Many thanks from the St. Matthews Kairos team for this fall (Dick Tobey, Bob Jennings, Randy Jones, Tom Weaver, Mike McEntire, and the Reverend Pat Watkins)

Hadley Davis is proof that you are never too young to help others. As a 10-year-old, she saw video of people who had lost everything in a tornado. Davis wanted to help them rebuild their lives. She started making and selling jewelry and gave the proceeds to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. UMCOR ensures that 100% of donations go directly to those in need. Davis has raised hundreds of dollars to help those affected by natural disasters. Davis’ elders are inspired by her “can-do” attitude despite her young age. “Think of how much better our world would be if everybody just pitched in and helped just a little bit,” says Davis.

Cookie Evangelism - Thank You from the Kairos Team

Thanks to all for baking cookies for the Kairos prison ministry.  We provided approximately 3500 dozen cookies and they were, of course, well received.  We distributed one dozen to every person in prison, and the security officers.  Many were sent across to the other prisons for their monthly reunions. Additionally, all of the weekend participants got all the cookies they could eat.  The impact of the cookies is best epitomized by one man, a Greek Cypriot Muslim.  He said he could always count on getting cookies twice a year.  There was at least one time when the prison was under ‘lock down’ and the residents could only eat the prison food with no chance to get to their commissary – at this low point someone from Kairos came by and gave him a dozen cookies.  He always remembered it and wanted to know who and what was behind the cookies before he left prison.  So he signed up for Kairos.  He learned the answer to both his questions that weekend – he was released on Monday with a new understanding of Christian love and Christ’s love - agape.  Thank you – your support has an impact.  Blessings, the Kairos Team.

Advent Offering: Support 6 Mission Partners

During this time of year when many of us are beginning to think about Christmas gifts, Saint Matthew’s UMC encourages you to give the gift of supporting the mission of God in the world.  This year’s Advent Offering will be used to support six mission partners (four international, two local).  We are hoping to receive $15,000 of total support, which would enable us to give $2,500 to each partner.  We encourage you to pray about this special offering and explore whether and how much God might be calling you to give to support these important ministry connections of St. Matthew’s beyond your current giving commitment.
