Do you know about One Great Hour of Sharing?  It is a way to help fund all of the excellent work done by UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief.  With donations through this special annual offering time, UMCOR can ensure that 100% of all other donations go to the specific causes that UMCOR supports.  Find out more about One Great Hour of Sharing and UMCOR.  Above is the latest podcast with guest, Norma Kehrberg, who speaks to the history of UMCOR as well as her thoughts on One Great Hour of Sharing.

UMC's Calling 21 Program for Young Adults

Super Typhoon Haiyan, perhaps the strongest storm ever, plowed across the Philippines on November 8th. The United Methodist Committee on Relief stands ready to respond through our office in the country.

You can help UMCOR assist in these relief efforts by donating online at: UMCOR.org.  If you are in worship at St. Matthew’s UMC this Sunday, we will also be taking a special offering if you do not want to donate online.

The reduced-cost or free lunch program in Fairfax County Public Schools is relied upon by many families in the county.  But what happens when these students who may not have enough to eat go home for the weekend?  Help feed children in our local community with P3 (Power Pack Program), which provides weekend meals to children in need.  Find out how you can help at www.stmatthewsumc.org.

Feed Children with us - St. Matthew’s has partnered Food For Others’ “Power Pack Program” (“P3”), a program that provides weekend meals for students at local schools who receive free or reduced lunch. Each student enrolled in the program receives a Ziploc bag containing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a healthy snack for Saturday and Sunday in his or her backpack each Friday. St. Matthew’s has committed to provide 60 of these bags each month, 50 of which will go to students at nearby Weyanoke Elementary School, a school with which we have partnered as part of our commitment to ministry with at-risk children in our community.  As a way to kick-off our P3 commitment for the year, we are asking every person at St. Matthew’s to bring specific supplies to church every Sunday between now and October 6.
The schedule is as follows:
9/8: Drinks (100% Fruit Juice Boxes/Pouches)
9/15: Breakfast item (Oatmeal packets, Breakfast Bars, Cereal Cups, etc.)
9/22: Lunch Item (Noodle/Chicken Soup Cups, Tuna Salad Kits, etc.)
9/29: Dinner Item (Chili Cups, Mac & Cheese Cups, Individual Pasta/Meat Cups, etc.)
10/6: Snacks (Cheese and Crackers, Fruit Cups, etc.)
These supplies can be dropped in the baskets labeled “P3” near the front and back entrances.  We hope to surpass our goal of 60 bags a month and collect enough supplies between now and October 6 to make 500 bags for the program during our October 12 Fall Service Day.

HELP TO FEED OUR HUNGRY NEIGHBORS:  In 2012, the St. Matthew’s Food Closet distributed over 563 grocery bags of food to our hungry neighbors.  Through this work, we are able to live out our faith and follow our Lord’s call to feed the hungry (Matthew 25:31-46).  In order to continue feeding our neighbors at the current rate, we are in need of significant additional support for the food closet.  Therefore, throughout the summer, we are asking every person to bring specific supplies to church each Sunday.  If you miss a Sunday, please consider bringing the supplies when you return.   The schedule of requested items for the next four weeks:
6/16: Canned Meat/Tuna
6/23:  Crackers in Stacks/ Hot Chocolate
6/30: Hot and Cold Cereal
7/7: Canned Soup
All donations can be placed in the marked containers near the front and rear entrances of the church.  Together, we can do God’s work of feeding our neighbors.

Reach out to our Struggling Neighbors:  The Walk-in Ministry at St. Matthew’s provides financial assistance to our neighbors and members of our congregation who are in need of emergency financial assistance to pay necessary bills (rent, utilities, etc.).  Through this ministry, we care for our Lord by caring for those on the margins of society (Matthew 25:34-40).  This ministry is funded entirely by direct donations and is currently running short on funds.  If you are interested in supporting it, please make a check out to St. Matthew’s UMC, put “Walk-in Ministry” in the memo line, and put the check in the offering plate.  Through your contributions, we are able to offer care to our most at-risk neighbors.
